Film One : Post it Love
We see that this film takes place in a office we as an audience can tell this by their clothes and the equipment in the film. The audience are looking at the setting of the film as it starts so they have an idea of what can possibly happen as an audience. Furthermore this film starts of with no dialogue so the audience pay attention to the setting to keep up with what's going on.
A convention that we see straight away is the theme. The theme of this film happens to be love. We see at 0:47 that the girl has a smirk on her face after she caught her self and the boy looking at each other at 0:43. We can tell from these scenes that they have a crush on each other or something is there. As the audience its to early to tell if they already are together or have a crush on each other but the target audience would assume its a crush. The director clearly tries to portray love and romance for the audience to have a clear visual of what's going on.
Another convention is characters. Due this being a short film characters is a big factor beacuse having a lot of characters can make the audience confused and the may not be able to keep up introducing multiple characters in a short film can be difficult beacuse the audience may not get to know all of them properly because its a short film.
Another convention that we see thorough out this short film is the lighting. Lighting is a big factor when it comes to films beacuse the audience expect good quality beacuse the setting of the film attracts the audience in oder for them to watch it. We see at 1:22 the blinds are up and its bright the bright light shows that this film does not contain horror beacuse if it was to be a horror film the lighting would be dark and dull. The audience can tell from the bright lighting its nothing dangerous.
Another convention we see in this short film is there is no dialogue between the characters at all. The audience have to just understand their actions and facial expressions. Its really important for the director to make sure that the facial expressions are understandable so that the audience do not get confused in what's going on. At 2.44 we see that the girl went and saw the boy sticking postick notes on the wall drawing them two she didn't speak they communicate through body langue and facial expressions. The audience would pick up on this and understand what's going on.
Second Film: Luxo Jr
The first convention we see in this short film the setting. We see that the setting is inside and dark perhaps its a table it looks like a table. This helps the audience know where the setting is and help understand what's going to happen. We see this at 0:07.
Another convention that we see is that this short film is a animation. The animation only contains objects in it which have human abilities. As the audience would know this is a animation they can tell that this is not real because in real life a human would have to control this in oder for it to move by itself. We see at 0.24 that the ball moved beacuse the lamp pushed it. The audience can tell that this is animated.
Another convention we see is the lighting. We see how the lighting has changed at 0:48 and has gone brighter. The lighting is used to make and brighter effect and draw the audience attention to the short film.
Another convention would be objects we see that the director only used 3 objects and and not a lot because the audience would find it hard to focus on everything. So the director used a few objects and gave them a purpose and the stood out. We see at 0.51 all the main objects are in focus and in the frame.
Third film: The present
The first convention we see is the setting in this short film which is inside. We can see that the film is taking place in a home. The audience are looking at the setting of the film as it starts so they have an idea of what can possibly happen as an audience. So in the start the audience are getting used to the setting. We see this at 0:11.
Another convention we see is lighting. We see a change of lighting at 0:38 when the mum opens the blinds. It goes from dark to bright. The audience see that this is a normal animation of a young boy that is to bust playing the game. The audience see a change on his face when the light gets brighter.
Another convention we see is twist. We see at 0:57 when his mum went up he opens the box. We see a change of emotion in the boy he goes from being to focused on the game to happy. The audience see that he likes the dog and became happy. We see the big gesture of his mum getting him a dog. The director made the audience feel and think that this is a adorable and cute moment.
Another convention we see is characters. We see at 0:24 that the mum and son are the only people in the film. The director did this to let the audience have a better understanding of the characters that are there because its a short film and there's not enough time to have other characters and introduce them. This is effective because this allows the audience to understand the characters better in short time.
